Behaviour Support

Who attends

Students placed in an ILS (Behaviour) class have behaviour support needs that are assessed as requiring intensive, structured intervention. Placements are made by the NSW Department of Education following a formal referral process, typically involving the student's school, a school counsellor, and regional learning and support staff. These are time-limited placements aimed at building the skills and self-regulation strategies that will allow the student to transition back to mainstream schooling.

What the school provides

ILS (Behaviour) classes have reduced class sizes and are staffed by specialist teachers and trained support personnel. The program combines structured academic learning with explicit instruction in social skills, emotional regulation, and positive behaviour strategies. Each student has an individual education plan, and progress toward reintegrating into mainstream school is regularly reviewed with families and the Department of Education.

Finding a school

The schools listed below are NSW government schools that currently operate an Intensive Learning Support (Behaviour) class. Placements are not made directly by families — if you believe your child may benefit from this kind of support, the first step is to speak with their school and request a learning and support assessment.
