Juvenile Justice Establishment

Who attends

Young people who are remanded in custody or serving a sentence in a NSW juvenile justice centre are entitled to education. The school at the centre provides full-time schooling during the period of detention, covering the same curriculum framework used in mainstream schools. Students range in age from around 10 to 18, though the majority are in secondary school years.

What the school provides

Juvenile justice schools provide a structured school day with small classes, specialist teachers, and a focus on re-engagement with education. Many young people entering the justice system have experienced disrupted schooling, so programs place a strong emphasis on foundational literacy and numeracy as well as vocational pathways. Work towards the Record of School Achievement (RoSA) or Higher School Certificate (HSC) can continue during detention. The aim is to build the educational foundation that reduces the likelihood of reoffending after release.
