Hospital School

Who attends

Students who are admitted to hospital or receiving ongoing medical treatment that prevents them from attending their home school are eligible to receive teaching from hospital school staff. This covers a wide age range and a wide range of medical conditions — from short-term surgical recovery to longer-term illnesses or mental health admissions. Students remain enrolled at their home school throughout their hospital stay.

What the school provides

Hospital school teachers work in wards and treatment areas, providing one-on-one or small-group instruction aligned with each student's home school curriculum. They liaise with the home school to keep students progressing through the same content their classmates are covering. The focus is on maintaining educational continuity, reducing the disruption of a medical admission, and supporting students' wellbeing during what can be a stressful time.

Finding a school

The schools listed below are the NSW government hospital schools. If your child is admitted to a hospital that has a school, teaching staff will typically make contact; if not, ask the nursing staff or the admissions team to connect you with the hospital school teacher.
