About the school

Awabakal Environmental Education Centre is an innovative school located within the Hunter Wetlands Centre, encompassing a 45-hectare complex of restored and natural wetlands. This area plays a significant role in the centre's educational programs, as it is designated as part of the Ramsar-listed Wetland of International Importance. The school's excursion programs are primarily focused on wetlands, exploring their diverse flora and fauna and the essential ecosystem services they offer. Through hands-on learning experiences, students engage with subjects such as wetland animals, plant life, water quality, rivers, and the sustainable management of wetland environments.

Educational Programs

The Awabakal Environmental Education Centre offers a wide range of fieldwork resources and programs tailored for students from Kindergarten to Year 12. These programs include both excursions and incursions linked directly to the NSW curriculum, ensuring that students gain valuable insights into environmental stewardship. The school supports the NSW Sustainable Schools program and collaborates with various national and international organisations, further enhancing the educational experience for its students. The dedicated team of educators at the Centre, which comprises enthusiastic teachers with backgrounds in Science, Geography, and environmental education, is committed to inspiring students to become passionate guardians of the planet.
