NSW public schools teaching Year 4
Year 4 completes Stage 2. For many families it is also the year they decide whether to apply for an opportunity class (OC) place for Years 5 and 6.
Opportunity class placement
Opportunity classes are Year 5 and 6 classes for high-potential students, run in a limited number of NSW public primary schools. Families apply during Year 4 and students sit the Opportunity Class Placement Test the same year for entry the following year. Applying is optional and most students continue in their regular class.
Learning in Year 4
Students work with larger numbers, fractions and decimals, and write across a range of text types with attention to structure and audience. Stage 2 outcomes are assessed at the end of the year. Many schools also run extension, sport and creative arts programs across Years 3 and 4.
