開始上學：招收幼稚園的新州公立學校
**幼稚園（Kindergarten）**是新州學校教育的第一年，也是幾乎所有公立小學、幼兒學校及中央學校的入學年級。由於絕大部分小學都由幼稚園開始，此列表接近新州公立小學的全部；它的用處在於讓家長知道自己有權入讀哪一間學校，以及孩子何時可以開始上學。
孩子何時可以入學
如孩子在該年 7 月 31 日或之前年滿五歲，便可於該學年開始時入讀幼稚園。年滿六歲的當年才屬強制入學，因此 2 月至 7 月出生的孩子，家長可以選擇即時入學或延後一年。入學申請直接向學校提交，一般在入學前一年的年中開始。
入讀哪一間學校
新州每個地址都屬於某一間本地公立學校的收生範圍，該學校必須向居住在範圍內的兒童提供學位。申請收生範圍以外的學校是可以的，但不獲保證。部分兒童會先入讀幼兒學校（幼稚園至二年級），三年級時轉到小學；中央學校則由幼稚園一直辦至十二年級。
開學初期
大部分學校會在前一年的第四學期舉辦迎新活動。幼稚園開學初期，教師會進行Best Start 幼稚園評估，以一對一形式了解兒童的早期讀寫及數理能力，用於規劃教學，並非為兒童排名或評級。Early Stage 1 的學習以遊戲為主，逐步建立閱讀、書寫及數字概念。
