About the school
Aurora College, New South Wales' first virtual school, commenced classes on 2 February 2015. The school aims to provide innovative and flexible learning opportunities by allowing students in rural and remote communities to connect locally while learning globally. Aurora combines online and residential school classes, enabling students to engage with their teachers and classmates through a state-of-the-art virtual learning environment, which includes web conferencing software and a learning management system.
Academic Programs
Aurora College caters specifically to gifted and talented students in Years 5 to 10 by offering selective classes in English, Mathematics and Science. Entry is determined through a competitive selection process aligned with NSW government schools. For Stage 6 students, the college provides access to subjects that may not be available at their local schools, ensuring a depth of study comparable to metropolitan institutions.
Opportunities and Partnerships
By partnering with various educational, business, and cultural institutions, Aurora College expands career options for its students. Mentoring and master classes are integral to the program, granting students insight from leaders in diverse fields. Residential camps held biannually offer practical lessons and social opportunities, enhancing the educational experience by connecting students with their peers and teachers.
Community Engagement
Aurora College notably runs the Young and Deadly Mob program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, helping to foster education within cultural contexts. The school’s approach is dedicated to building an engaged, supportive community that enhances learning outcomes for all students, particularly those from regional, rural, and remote areas.
