About the school
Woodberry Learning Centre (WLC) is a NSW Department of Education school established in 2007, designed as a School for Specific Purposes (SSP) for students in Years 5-8. It caters to those who have faced challenges in maintaining engagement in mainstream education due to behavioural issues, mental health concerns, and complex trauma. The academic program at WLC is focused on personalised literacy and numeracy support, ensuring that each student’s unique needs are addressed.
Student Wellbeing Framework
The school implements a robust wellbeing framework influenced by the Berry Street Education Model, Trauma Informed Practice, Choice Theory, and the NeuroSequential Model in Education. Furthermore, WLC has a strong commitment to Aboriginal Education, fostering productive relationships with local Elders and the Maitland Local Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG).
Classes and Placements
Currently, WLC operates three Behaviour Difficulty (BD) classes for students in Years 5-8, with plans to introduce two Emotional Disturbance (ED) classes for students in Years 7 and 8 by 2025. Students enrolled in the BD classes receive a 40-week placement, after which they transition back to their base school or continue in a different supported environment. In contrast, students in the ED classes have an ongoing placement, allowing for continued support.
WLC is committed to providing a high-quality educational experience tailored to the needs of its students and ensuring every learner feels safe, included, and ready to engage in their education journey.
