About the school
Queanbeyan South Public School is a culturally diverse primary school located in a large regional city near the border of the Australian Capital Territory, with a student population of 360. The school provides an inclusive educational environment where students from 35 cultural backgrounds, including 21% Aboriginal and 28% from language backgrounds other than English, can learn and grow. It offers two district Opportunity classes for gifted and talented students and three multicategorical classes for those with learning difficulties.
A highlight of the school is its commitment to early intervention through the Ngurranbai on-site Transition to School Program for children aged three to five, operating four days a week. The educational approach is characterised by a focus on equity and excellence, particularly in literacy and numeracy through programs like the Early Action for Success (Literacy) Program. Enhanced learning strategies such as Language Literacy and Learning (L3) and Targeted Early Numeracy (TEN) are priorities for professional development, specifically in Years K-2. Moreover, technology plays a significant role, with video conferencing, computer labs, and interactive whiteboards integrated into the learning environment.
Beyond academics, Queanbeyan South engages in the Active After School sports program and fosters a rich cultural environment through a large school choir and participation in the Queanbeyan Performing Arts Festival. The school's motto, 'We Care We Strive,' reflects its dedication to encouraging students to have high expectations and achieve personal excellence. The core values of Respect, Responsibility, and Safety underpin the school's Positive Behaviour for Success welfare program, aimed at developing happy and successful 21st-century learners.
