NSW public high schools teaching Year 9

Year 9 begins Stage 5, the two years leading to the Record of School Achievement. It is the first year students study elective subjects of their own choosing and the final year they sit NAPLAN.

Electives

Alongside the mandatory subjects, Year 9 students take the elective courses chosen at the end of Year 8. Electives are 100-hour or 200-hour courses and the range depends on the school; specialist high schools often offer deeper options in their focus area. Grades earned in Stage 5 courses are reported on the Record of School Achievement (RoSA) for students who leave before the HSC.

Learning in Year 9

Students sit NAPLAN in March for the last time. Mathematics is usually taught in pathways suited to different levels, science and history become more analytical, and many schools begin careers education and work-readiness programs.
