NSW public high schools teaching Year 8

Year 8 completes Stage 4, the first two years of high school. Students have settled into subject-based timetables, and at most schools this is the year the mandatory language course is finished and the first elective choices for Year 9 are made.

Languages and electives

NESA requires every student to complete 100 hours of one language other than English during Stage 4, taught as a continuous course, most often in Year 7 or Year 8. Toward the end of Year 8, students choose their Stage 5 electives, which vary by school and can include additional languages, visual and performing arts, technologies, commerce, physical activity and other courses.

Learning in Year 8

Stage 4 outcomes across English, mathematics, science, history, geography, creative arts, technology and PDHPE are assessed at the end of the year. There is no NAPLAN in Year 8.
