NSW public high schools enrolling Year 7
Year 7 is the first year of high school in NSW and the start of Stage 4. The list below is the set of public high schools, central schools and selective schools that enrol students at this entry point, which is why it is far shorter than the primary-year lists.
Kinds of high school
Most students attend their local comprehensive high school, which must offer a place to everyone living in its catchment. Other options include fully and partially selective high schools (entry by placement test), high schools with a specialty in agriculture, performing arts, sport, technology or another subject, single-sex schools, and central schools in rural areas. Newly arrived students learning English may first attend an Intensive English Centre attached to a high school.
Learning in Year 7
Students move from one classroom teacher to specialist teachers for each subject. They sit NAPLAN in March, study all the mandatory key learning areas, and in Stage 4 complete a 100-hour language course in a language other than English, most often in Year 7 or Year 8.
