NSW public schools teaching Year 6

Year 6 is the final year of primary school and of Stage 3. Much of the year, for families, is about the move to high school: confirming the local high school, considering other options and completing the transition steps.

Moving to Year 7

Early in Year 6, usually in Term 1, NSW public primary schools give families an expression of interest form for Year 7 in a government high school. Every address has a local public high school that must take students living in its catchment; families can also request a place at another school. Students seeking a selective high school sit the Selective High School Placement Test in Year 6. High schools run orientation days in Term 4.

Learning in Year 6

Stage 3 outcomes are assessed at the end of the year. Students take on more independent projects, leadership roles and, at many schools, a Year 6 camp or farewell. In some areas the primary years continue at a central school, which runs from Kindergarten to Year 12 on one site.
