NSW public schools teaching Year 3

Year 3 begins Stage 2, the middle of primary school. It is the first year students sit the national NAPLAN tests, and the entry year for primary schools that receive students from a separate infants school.

NAPLAN

In March, Year 3 students across Australia sit NAPLAN in reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. Results go to families and to schools to inform teaching. SchoolAtlas does not publish NAPLAN results or use them to compare schools.

Learning in Year 3

Students read and write longer, more varied texts, learn multiplication and division facts, and work with fractions and data. Science, history and geography become distinct subjects with their own investigations. The emphasis shifts from learning to read toward reading to learn, and students are expected to work more independently.
