NSW public schools teaching Year 2

Year 2 completes Stage 1. Students are expected to finish the year reading fluently, writing simple structured texts and working confidently with addition, subtraction and early multiplication. It is also the last year at an infants school, where one exists.

Infants schools

A small number of NSW public schools are infants schools that teach only Kindergarten to Year 2. Children at these schools move to a nearby primary school for Year 3, so families in those areas will need to check the Year 3 list for the receiving school. Most children, however, stay at the same primary school throughout.

Learning in Year 2

The Stage 1 outcomes are assessed at the end of Year 2. Students consolidate phonics and spelling, read longer texts, write recounts and narratives, and in mathematics work with two-digit numbers, patterns, measurement and simple data.
