NSW public schools teaching Year 1
Year 1 is the first year of Stage 1 in the NSW curriculum and the first full year of formal lessons after Kindergarten. Nearly every school that offers Kindergarten also offers Year 1, so the list below is essentially the same set of primary, infants and central schools.
What changes from Kindergarten
Lessons become more structured, with daily reading, writing and mathematics blocks. Students learn to read and write short texts independently, work with numbers to 100, and begin the key learning areas in more depth: science and technology, history and geography, creative arts, and personal development and health.
The Phonics Screening Check
In Term 3, every NSW public school gives Year 1 students the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check, a short one-to-one check of how well a child can sound out words. It is a teaching tool, not a test that is reported publicly, and families are told how their child went.
