Public schools with a pre-school

A Department pre-school is an early-childhood service run inside a NSW public school for children in the year before they start Kindergarten. Only a small share of public schools have one, so this list is much shorter than the Kindergarten list.

Who can attend

Children are eligible in the year they turn four, provided they turn four on or before 31 July. Places are limited and priority goes to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, children from low-income families and children with disability or additional needs, in line with Department policy. Attendance is usually part-time across a set number of days each week, and Department pre-schools are currently fee-free.

What children do

Pre-school sits outside the NESA school curriculum. Programs follow the national Early Years Learning Framework, which emphasises play-based learning, language, social skills and confidence, rather than formal reading and writing. Having the pre-school on the same site makes the move into Kindergarten familiar, but attending a school's pre-school does not by itself guarantee a Kindergarten place there.
