About the school

Alma Public School is a preschool to Year 6 school located in the southern part of Broken Hill. The school draws students from a diverse local community, with approximately 37% of its students identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. The school community is dedicated to providing a quality teaching and learning environment, immersing students in a range of key learning areas (KLAs) and maintaining a positive welfare system.

The school operates a DEC Aboriginal designated preschool for up to 40 children on a separate site and is predominantly linked with the Wilykali people of the Paakantyi Nation. To support its students, Alma receives additional funding aimed at addressing the low-socioeconomic circumstances of many families. As an Early Action for Success (EAfS) school, Alma has implemented tiered interventions focusing on literacy and numeracy outcomes for students in Kindergarten to Year 2.

Sport is an integral part of the Alma community, featuring prominently in both school activities and broader community engagement. Additionally, a kitchen and garden program encourages life skills development, providing experiences that may not be accessible at home due to local conditions. The school collaborates closely with local businesses and health agencies, notably hosting fourth-year students from the University NSW Rural Health Division in speech pathology and occupational therapy.

Furthermore, the Health Hub, established in 2016, serves as a resource for these Allied Health students, enhancing the support network available to the Alma community.
