开始上学：招收幼儿园的新州公立学校
**幼儿园（Kindergarten）**是新州学校教育的第一年，也是几乎所有公立小学、幼儿学校及中央学校的入学年级。由于绝大部分小学都从幼儿园开始，此列表接近新州公立小学的全部；它的用处在于让家长知道自己有权入读哪一所学校，以及孩子何时可以开始上学。
孩子何时可以入学
如孩子在该年 7 月 31 日或之前年满五岁，便可于该学年开始时入读幼儿园。年满六岁的当年才属强制入学，因此 2 月至 7 月出生的孩子，家长可以选择即时入学或推后一年。入学申请直接向学校提交，一般在入学前一年的年中开始。
入读哪一所学校
新州每个地址都属于某一所本地公立学校的招生范围，该学校必须向居住在范围内的儿童提供学位。申请招生范围以外的学校是可以的，但不获保证。部分儿童会先入读幼儿学校（幼儿园至二年级），三年级时转到小学；中央学校则从幼儿园一直办到十二年级。
开学初期
大部分学校会在前一年的第四学期举办迎新活动。幼儿园开学初期，教师会进行Best Start 幼儿园评估，以一对一形式了解儿童的早期读写及数理能力，用于规划教学，并非为儿童排名或评级。Early Stage 1 的学习以游戏为主，逐步建立阅读、书写及数字概念。
