About the school
Baryulgil Public School is a small, isolated school located in the Upper Clarence Valley, 85 kilometres northwest of Grafton. The school serves as a crucial community hub within an area that lacks commercial services, alongside the Aboriginal Lands Council and the Bulgarr-Ngaru Medical Service, which provides limited community services. The unique Baryulgil community consists of the two small settlements of Baryulgil and Malabugilmah, surrounded by commercial farmland.
With an enrolment base of fewer than 10 students, the majority of whom are Aboriginal, Baryulgil Public School embraces Aboriginal culture and language as integral parts of its ethos. The school runs a transition program for preschool-age children to foster readiness for formal education. A strong emphasis is placed on improving literacy and numeracy outcomes while also valuing cultural inclusivity and student engagement.
Students and staff are provided opportunities to connect with peers from other schools through sporting activities, excursions, and various cultural and educational experiences. Baryulgil Public School is well-resourced, boasting a high level of technology. Community participation is highly encouraged, reflecting the school motto, 'Working With the Community', which underpins the institution's values and practices. The school takes pride in being a member of the Clarence Valley Community of Small Schools, fostering collaboration and cooperation with other educational institutions in the region.
