About the school
Hunter River High School is a comprehensive, co-educational secondary school located on Worimi land in Heatherbrae, south of Raymond Terrace. With an enrolment of approximately 860 students, 20 percent of whom identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, the school prides itself on fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment. The motto, 'Quality Relationships - Quality Learning', reflects the school’s belief that effective educational outcomes are attained when all partners in the educational journey collaborate in a supportive atmosphere. The school is committed to high expectations and embraces Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) values of Respect, Responsibility, and Excellence.
Academically, Hunter River High School offers an innovative curriculum that includes a full academic load alongside programs that focus on Vocational Education and Training (VET). As a P-TECH school, it specializes in advanced manufacturing and aeroskills, and it leads in STEM education initiatives. The school actively enhances Aboriginal education, as well as Literacy and Numeracy outcomes. Hunter River High School is dedicated to supporting every student's growth, working closely with families to create personalized learning plans that cater to individual needs.
