NSW public schools teaching Year 5
Year 5 begins Stage 3, the final stage of primary school. It is the second NAPLAN year, the first year of opportunity classes, and the year applications open for selective high school entry in Year 7.
Opportunity classes and selective entry
Schools running opportunity classes take students who were placed through the test sat in Year 4; the classes run for Years 5 and 6. Separately, families who want a fully or partially selective high school for Year 7 apply while their child is in Year 5, with the placement test sat in Year 6.
Learning in Year 5
Students sit NAPLAN in March. Across the year they read and analyse more complex texts, write persuasive and informative pieces, and in mathematics work with decimals, percentages, angles and data. Science, history and geography involve independent research and reports.
