About the school
Longneck Lagoon Environmental Education Centre is located in Scheyville National Park, just 12 km north of Windsor. This unique educational facility spans across a remarkable 952 hectares of remnant Cumberland Plain Woodland and features a seventeen hectare freshwater lagoon, making it a significant conservation area for flora and fauna in the Sydney basin. The park is home to three endangered species of flora and fauna and boasts over 160 recorded bird species.
Longneck Lagoon also carries a rich Aboriginal and European heritage, with several Aboriginal sites including middens and camp sites located around the lagoon. The European history of the area dates back to 1794, when it was part of the Nelson Common, with observable impacts from historical land use evident around the lagoon catchment.
The Centre provides opportunities for students from K to 12, as well as TAFE and university students, to study this valuable freshwater ecosystem. The majority of the educational programs on offer focus on the wetland environment as a fragile and dynamic ecosystem. Facilities include an office, classroom, and essential amenities, allowing for an engaging and supportive learning experience. The Centre thus plays a vital role in fostering education and awareness about environmental conservation and the importance of sustainable practices.
