About the school
Parkes Public School is located in the centre of Parkes and has a strong academic, sporting, and performing arts history. The school is highly inclusive, operating strong learning and support programs, and caters to students from Kindergarten to Year 6. It is situated on a split site, benefiting from separate playgrounds for Infants and Primary children. With approximately 420 students across 17 mainstream classes and a support unit for 28 children enrolled in four multicategorical classes, the school demonstrates a commitment to inclusivity, welcoming children with disabilities into mainstream classrooms.
Over 90 students come from an Aboriginal background, while 12 students have English as their second language. The experienced teaching staff consists of over 35 teachers, 15 School Learning Support Officers, and an Aboriginal Education Officer/Language Tutor. The school implements Positive Behaviour for Learning principles, fostering responsible and respectful learners in a safe environment, and emphasises the importance of accountability for one's actions.
Parkes Public School places a strong focus on Literacy, Numeracy, and the Performing Arts. It offers specialised programs such as L3 and L31, Jolly Phonics, and Teaching Early Numeracy, among others. A dedicated specialist teacher provides music, drama, and dance instruction for K-4 students, and students have opportunities to participate in various extracurricular activities, including the school band and choir. Moreover, the school incorporates Wiradjuri language and culture into its curriculum.
In terms of student well-being, the school offers social skills groups, a breakfast club, peer support, and an innovative prefect system, alongside a sensory gym for daily use. Technology is a significant focus, with tools like Google Classroom and iPads enhancing the learning experience.
